Having a Healthy and Happy Holiday

Often people feel guilty before the holidays even start. If you’re thinking about all the treats and endless mounds of food that might be available at every occasion, you may just drive yourself to drink..literally!

Maybe your New Year’s resolution is to get back on track. That’s great! But what if you had a new approach going into this holiday season. No regrets, guilty feelings or body shaming. We’ve all been there! Give yourself a break. It’s a time for family, friends, celebration and gratitude.


Here are some healthy tips to keep you going!


  1. Hydrate! - For every one cocktail, drink a glass of water.

  2. Movement – Find some way to move your body. Hit the ski hill, grab you snowshoes, go for a walk, toboggan with the kids, find a yoga class, try a HIIT workout on youtube! There’s so many awesome ways to move even when it’s cold and snowy.

  3. Choose Green - Sure, indulge in your favourite treat but follow it up with a green juice or my favourite, roasted veggies! Perfect for winter.

  4. SLEEP – Winter is a time when we are naturally supposed to slow down a little. Try and find a regular sleep schedule and stick to it. Cut the caffeine in the afternoon and get restful zzz’s.

  5. Say NO! -  If you really don’t feel like being social and going to one party after another, don’t. It’s okay to rest and rejuvenate and say no. Sometimes that’s exactly what the body needs.

  6. Self Care – Make time for a bath, or that restoration yoga class you’ve been meaning to try. Read a book. Meditate. Binge watch that new show on Netflix all afternoon. Get a massage. Go on a date night. Treat yourself to lunch while Christmas shopping. Heck, buy yourself a Christmas gift. Whatever it is, schedule it in. It doesn’t have to cost money, it’s simply just time set aside from your day to care for yourself. You will be better because of it and others will reap the benefits!


Incorporating some of these mindful practices will keep your healthy and happy this winter. Even if you choose just one thing it will bring some balance back into your life.

Remember, don’t beat yourself up! Enjoy this time with the ones your love the most.
